Time not Place

Photography, for me, is a way of paying attention.

I’m less interested in what something is than in what it feels like to stand there.

In the quiet before motion, or the calm after.

I work across landscapes, urban spaces, and moments of transit,
always returning to the same idea: time shapes everything.

These images aren’t meant to be loud.
They’re meant to linger.

The work speaks as a whole.

About the Artist

Jim Steffensmeier is a Kansas-based photographer and U.S. Army veteran whose work explores the quiet presence of time in the landscapes we move through and leave behind. His photographs often focus on moments of stillness, passage, and human traces across rural and urban spaces.

Working across prairies, forests, towns, and roads, his images reflect a long-standing interest in how light, memory, and place intersect.

Steffensmeier holds a Master of Education in Adult Education and Training and a bachelor’s degree in Psychology. His background in military service, education, and technology has shaped an observational approach that is attentive to subtle human presence and the passage of time within the landscape.

He is currently developing a long-form photographic project exploring the quiet rhythms of time across American landscapes and communities.
